ExpressionWorks Update October 8, 2015

Last night our group had an amazing ExpressionWorks session with special guest comic, Michael McCreary! Thanks to Alanna Balicki for arranging, this proved to be a memorable experience for all involved. Sadly we had three participants away, but we were glad to be joined by our new volunteer Divya as well as a new friend Abdullah. We were happy to see Abdullah eager and ready to join in as he took on leading our second leadership stretch to hip hop music. Way to go buddy! Our leaders this week were Anna, Jordan and Petra who helped to introduce us to our Guest Artist Michael. Michael was kind enough to share a short comedy set with us all. We then worked on writing and asking questions about his interests and practice. Go ahead and check out the handout which was given out for website info and sensory games online. Website link below. As this was our 4th week Clowning, we did clown plays in two small groups while also highlighting our clowns wishes. This was a real treat! So beautiful to watch everyone’s imagination come to life.
Don’t forget next week is our crafty arts session. If you have an Art Smock why not bring it along.

See you there!

Michael McCreary may only be nineteen years old, but he’s already well on his way to fulfilling his lifelong, albeit short, dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. The young comic, a high school student in Orangeville, Ontario, was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at the age of five. In an act of self-preservation, combined with the desire for constant attention and the inability to stop talking, stand-up comedy seemed inevitable. Michael combined his love of comedy and his obsession with Hollywood movies and trained under David Granirer, founder of Stand Up for Mental Health, to create his act ”Does This Make My Asperger’s Look Big?” Over the past 4 years Michael has performed at conferences, galas, universities, bars and church basements across Canada and the United States. See the world through his eyes as he takes you on a comical journey through the lighter side of Asperger’s Syndrome.
