SocialWorks Update – Week of Feb 24th, 2016

Hello SocialWorks Families and Participants,

Pease note starting this week, Adina will no longer be sending out e-mails directly. We are moving in the direction like we do with all the other Programs, where we direct  families to use the DramaWay Blog – so please look there for future updates. To make it convenience for you we will also send out a link that week with the Blog link that will directly to you. As we know some of you may find it confusing to use the Blog.  To help, we suggest you Favourite/Bookmark this link

https://dramawayblog.wordpress.com/category/socialworks/

We hope you all enjoyed your weekend! If the road conditions are unsafe by 3 pm tonight, we will e-mail families and update the blog immediately and re-schedule our programming. Stay tuned.

This week, we will focus on confidence speaking. We will work on building one on one conversations – as well as public speaking. Over the next 2 weeks, we will attempt to think and write speeches in class which will be performed and presented to the group, and then to our parents at the end of the year showcase. In lieu of February being Back History Month, our speeches will be based on the “I Have A Dream” speech. Each participant will work on a speech on what they dream of, whether it be eating the largest pizza in the world, going to Disneyland, or equity for all – we will give our participants free reign to share their thoughts and ideas on their future dreams and aspirations. We will work on various types of speeches, allowing participants to write, show pictures, program or verbally perform their work.  To get everyone’s memory active – it could be helpful to ask your participant what some of their wishes/dreams are. Once again if your participant uses a communication device, please ensure that is being sent and pulled out at the start of each night at program before you leave.

Last week, we took at look at the serious issue of bullying. We looked at how to speak out against bullies, stand-up for ourselves as well as making sure we know the difference between tattling and telling adults when there is a problem to make sure we don’t come off as the bully or get our issues resolved without feeling like a tattle. Our groups worked really well with one another, and seem to have a great handle on the concepts! Good job everyone! If parents are interested in any further information on Bullying/Bullying Resources – the Peel District School Board has amazing free resources at this link: http://www.peelschools.org/aboutus/safeschools/bullying/Pages/default.aspx

DramaWay Actor & Dancer Sam Forbes A.k.a the Dancing Barista visits Ellen!

We are so delighted to be featuring this clip here on our Blog of our dear friend, DramaWay Actor & Dancer Sam Forbes.  He is now well known by millions as the Dancing Starbucks Barista, but we’ve known he’s been a true talent since the day we met him.

So happy that our DramaWay performers get these type of opportunities!  Way to go Sam!

ExpressionWorks Class Update – February 4th

ExpressionWorks Blog Entry – Class Update for February 4th by Volunteer Sam Webster
This week at ExpressionWorks we celebrated classic Disney musicals in all of their nostalgia-inducing glory. After all the participants chose their favourite musicals, the class engaged in a series of vibrant dance movements inspired by particular songs from the chosen films.

What especially struck our team about this class, was how each participant’s intense passion for musicals was on display in the individual creativity of dance styles and movements. Class-leader Alanna Balicki skillfully facilitated and supported this passion while simultaneously providing pertinent additional themes and subject matter into the movements.

For instance, during our movement for The Lion King, participants chose their favourite characters from the film and, on the spot, constructed awesome movements inspired by such characters. We were then able to incorporate a ‘circle of life’ theme wherein all of these characters were eventually connected in a human dance circle.

This was a really cool class to be a part of. As a volunteer and actively engaged helper, I certainly have a new appreciation for how musicals can both motivate a large group dance movement while encouraging the individual to explore and express important universal themes on their own.

Dance Tutorials for our DramaWorks Performers

Here are the Dance tutorials for our dances which will be incorporated in our DramaWorks Productions 2016 this year.  This first link is to the James Brown I Feel Good dance. Practice daily if you can rehearsing it two times back to back so you can remember it and do it without thinking once at program and ultimately when you perform at our big showcase!

This second link is the Dance Tutorial for our Ballroom dance to the song by Lana Del Ray. Remember Cindy and The Prince will gets some different actions to complete up until the Pointing section very soon. For now everyone should work on this, remembering you’ll be doing it with your partner.
